Euro-Mon Community

In the 26-27 July 2003 all Mon organizations in European countries attended the Euro Mon meeting. The meeting took place in Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, and we formed the organization Euro-Mon Community.

• To strengthen unity among Mon people,
• To improve the national education, culture, literature, and community development,
• To cooperate with other nationalities in Burma and international communities to reform Burma into a democratic Federal Union, are our main purpose.

The Burmese army often accuses local Mons people as rebel sympathizers, killings, rapes, forced labours, and lands confiscating by the army are widespread in the areas.
After land confiscation, the Mon farmers in the surrounding areas greatly suffered as below;

1. Suddenly being deprived of employment
2. Deterioration in social life
3. Population Displacement and Flux of Refugees
4. Migrating into Thailand

UN Envoy returns from Myanmar - Professor Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights Situation in Myanmar, retuned from his latest visit to the country on the 10th of November, 2003. He spoke with Karishma Vyas from the UN Information Services about the outcomes of his visit.
